The Galápagos Islands: Snorkeling, Sun, and Evolutionary Wonders
Our Galápagos and Ecuador itinerary began with waterfront dining and pisco sours, followed by snorkeling, wildlife encounters, and unforgettable moments in the Andes and Amazon. It was a journey full of contrast and connection, from sea lions and lava tunnels to rainforest canopy walks and cathedral bells.
We began our adventure with three nights in the Galápagos Islands, using one island as our home base and setting out each day by boat to explore the others. Each island revealed something new: sea lions sunbathing on volcanic rocks, blue-footed boobies nesting on cliffs, and schools of colorful fish darting through crystal-clear waters while we snorkeled alongside them. The wildlife isn’t just abundant—it’s unbothered by humans, which makes for surreal and up-close encounters.
We stayed at a city hotel, Hotel Cucuve, on Santa Cruz Island, which made it easy to join day trips to nearby islands and enjoy the town’s shops and restaurants. For a more immersive or luxurious experience, consider Pikaia Lodge, a stunning eco-luxury property perched on an extinct volcanic crater with panoramic views and its own private yacht. Another standout is the Galapagos Safari Camp, offering a unique tented experience on a highland farm — perfect for travelers seeking comfort, seclusion, and a closer connection to nature.

A Pause in the Andes
After the islands, we headed into the highlands for a night at a hot springs resort in the Andes. This part of our Galápagos and Ecuador itinerary was the perfect interlude—soaking in natural thermal pools with misty mountains in the background, breathing in the cool, clean air. The contrast between sea level and sky was invigorating.
Into the Amazon: Canoes, Caimans, and Canopy Views

A standout experience in our Galápagos and Ecuador itinerary was our stay at the Napo Cultural Center, deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We spent three nights immersed in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. It felt like stepping into a nature documentary—hiking by day and night to spot monkeys, vibrant birds, iridescent insects, and even the famous and elusive pink dolphin! We climbed an observation tower for views over the canopy, paddled through narrow jungle waterways in canoes, and even swam in the river—safely, and with a sense of awe.
Staying at Napo was more than just eco-luxury—it was an immersive experience. The Kichwa Añangu community operates the center, and every aspect of the experience is infused with their knowledge and profound respect for the land.
Quito: Markets, Cathedrals, and Culture

Before flying home, we spent a day in Quito, Ecuador’s capital and one of the best-preserved colonial cities in South America. Our guided tour took us through lively local markets filled with bright fruit stands and handwoven textiles, into grand cathedrals where centuries of history echo through stained glass and stone, and across plazas where you can feel the pulse of the city’s past and present. We heard stories of conquest and resilience, learned about Ecuador’s multiethnic identity, and—of course—enjoyed an excellent meal. Quito is a vibrant finale for any journey through Ecuador, rich with history, architecture, and flavor.
