Planning a Greece Trip? Here’s What I Learned After Two Weeks Exploring the Country

After two weeks in Greece — visiting Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Costa Navarino, and the Epirus coast — I came away with a very different perspective on what it takes to plan a great trip here.

We saw a lot… and also barely scratched the surface.

Greece looks pretty simple: fly in and out of Athens, visit a few islands…but in reality, the experience depends heavily on how well it’s planned. And Greece is so much more than Athens and Santorini.

These are the takeaways that matter most if you’re thinking about planning a trip to Greece. Bottom line? Give me a call and I’ll help you plan it!

You Can’t “Do Greece” in One Trip

Even with two full weeks, we only experienced a small slice of what Greece offers.

Each region and island feels completely different. Trying to fit too much into one trip often leads to more time in transit than actually enjoying where you are.

If anything, Greece is best approached as a destination you return to, rather than one you try to check off all at once.

Not All Greek Islands Are the Same

This is one of the most important things to understand when planning a Greece itinerary.

Mykonos, Santorini, and Corfu each offered completely different experiences:

  • Mykonos felt flexible and fun, and staying at a classic beach club resort extended that fun vibe. We rented a car and explored freely.
  • Santorini was dramatic and scenic, with iconic views but also crowds. We visited the historic Akrotiri Archaeological Site (similar to Pompeii) and the artsy Megalochori.
  • Corfu was lush, green, and more relaxed, with a very different energy. Corfu is just off the Greek mainland, sharing the Ionian Sea with Italy, and was ruled by Venice for 400 years.
  • We island-hopped one day and visited several smaller islands, which are ideal for experiencing more traditional and less touristy spots.

Choosing the right island shouldn’t be about what’s popular; it’s about what fits how you like to travel and what you want to see and do.

Greece Logistics Matter More Than You Expect

One of the biggest surprises is how much logistics impacts the experience.

For example, we took the ferry from Mykonos to Santorini, and while it sounds simple, it was one of the more chaotic parts of the trip. We saw dozens of people completely miss their ferry. By contrast, short flights between islands were far more efficient and relaxed, but they don’t operate daily.

Transfers, timing, and the way you move between destinations all play a significant role in how the trip feels day to day. We sometimes had a private transfer, hired a taxi, or rented a car or a scooter.

On paper, Greece can look easy to plan. In reality, the details make a big difference.

The Pace of Your Trip Matters More Than the Number of Stops

We covered a lot of ground, and while it was incredible, it also reinforced how important pacing is. Moving too often, even between beautiful places, can take away from the overall experience. Greece has over 18,000 registered historical sites, 6000 islands and islets, 8500 miles of coastline, and over 10,000 hotels. Narrowing down vacation options is as important as setting priorities. Spending more time in fewer locations allows you to settle in, enjoy the rhythm of each place, and avoid turning the trip into a series of transitions.

The chaos of the ferry boarding process is unreal.

Athens Deserves More Time Than People Give It

Many travelers treat Athens as a quick stop before heading to the islands, but it ended up being one of the most interesting parts of the trip.

The Acropolis is incredible, but what stood out even more was the city’s energy — the neighborhoods, the food, and the depth of history.

Having a private guide made a meaningful difference here. It transformed the experience from simply “seeing” the sites to actually understanding them. We visited the Acropolis and Parthenon, the historic Plaka neighborhood, the Ancient Agora, the Olympic Stadium, and the Athenian Trilogy.

I couldn’t get enough of this view from our hotel!

Greece Surprised Me

There were a few things that stood out that I didn’t fully anticipate before going:

  • The warmth and personality of the people added so much to the experience. Greek hospitality is something you feel. It’s not just good service, it’s a genuine warmth and generosity, where you’re welcomed more like a guest than a customer. Service wasn’t always perfect or polished, but it was authentic and personal.
  • The history feels completely different when you’re standing in it. I didn’t appreciate the depth and width of historical sites and contributions to institutions like democracy, philosophy, trial by jury, math, and medicine.
  • I enjoyed Greek wine and food more than I expected, and I didn’t really understand the variety of options before I visited: slow-cooked stews, just-caught seafood, and simple dishes made extraordinary with olive oil, lemon, and fresh herbs.
  • English is a required course each year in public education, which makes visiting anywhere in the country pretty easy for Americans (while still feeling like you’re definitely not in America!).

Where You Stay Shapes the Entire Experience

Staying at Nammos Hotel Mykonos combines barefoot (ultra) luxury with Mediterranean chic vibes.

The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort in Costa Navarino, is a perfect hub for beach days, world-class golf & tennis, shopping, exploring, and relaxing.

This is especially true in Greece.

Views, location, and hotel style all play a major role in how each destination feels. In places like Santorini or along the coast, the right hotel can completely elevate the experience, while the wrong one can limit it.

It’s not just about luxury, it’s about choosing the right property for the setting.

Where I stayed and the hotels I chose (remember, I can secure additional VIP amenities at all of these hotels for you):

  • Hotel Grande Bretagne, Athens – Widely recognized as one of Europe’s most iconic hotels, Hotel Grande Bretagne offers historic elegance, a prime Syntagma Square location, and some of the best Acropolis views in the city.
  • Nammos Hotel Mykonos – A chic, high-energy beachfront stay with a stylish scene, beautiful design, and direct access to one of Mykonos’ most iconic beach clubs.
  • Santorini Secret Suites & Spa, Oia – An intimate, cliffside retreat with classic white-and-blue views, private terraces, and a front-row seat to Santorini’s famous sunsets.
  • Grecotel Corfu Imperial, Corfu – A refined beachfront resort set on its own peninsula, offering a mix of seclusion, multiple beaches, and easy access to Corfu Town.
  • The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, Costa Navarino – A polished, expansive resort ideal for beach days, golf, tennis, and a well-rounded luxury stay in mainland Greece.
  • MarBella Elix, Epirus – A serene, design-forward escape perched above the Ionian Sea, with stunning views, a secluded beach, and a more off-the-radar feel.

Having the Right Support on the Ground Changes Everything

This was the biggest takeaway, and exactly why I spend so much time carefully vetting the partners I trust with my clients’ experiences.

At one point, our flight from the coast to Athens was canceled after we were dropped off at the airport due to fog. We were disappointed and frustrated, feeling stranded at a small airport. We called the Destination Management Company we were working with. Our on-the-ground team immediately pivoted, arranged a private drive to Athens, and turned it into one of the most memorable days of the entire trip, including a visit to Meteora.

That kind of experience doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from having the right people in place who can adapt quickly and think ahead.

Final Thoughts: What Actually Matters When Planning a Trip to Greece

Greece is one of those destinations where the difference between a good trip and a great one comes down to the details.

It’s not just about where you go — it’s how you move between places, how long you stay, where you stay, and who’s helping you navigate it all.

If you’re thinking about planning a trip to Greece, I’d be happy to help you shape it in a way that reflects how you like to travel, not just what’s trending. Reach out to get started!
